11th November, Saint Martin in Venice

11th November marks a traditional feast spread throughout Veneto to celebrate Saint Martin of Tours, one of the most popular Saints in Europe since the Middle Ages, whose funeral was held on 11th November 397.

Ancient rural traditions are the foundations of this occasion, which was included in Christian feasts and gave life to many popular practices: during these days of the year, farmers celebrated the end of the works in the fields, drinking young wines and eating roast chestnuts. Today, on Venetian tables (but not only), the protagonist is the short pastry dessert depicting Saint Martin on horseback, wielding a sword and wearing a cloak. It can be decorated with sugar icing or covered with chocolate and garnished with confections, sugared almonds and sweets. Find out how to prepare it with the original recipe.

The church dedicated to Saint Martin is located in Castello district, not far away from the Arsenale, and it is considered one of the most ancient ones in Venice. The current building dates back to the sixteenth century and it was designed by architect Jacopo Sansovino. The church protected some of the relics of the Saint, such as a piece of his tunic, a phalange and a tibia. This latter was then donated to Scuola di San Giovanni Evangelista which, every year on 11th November, is obliged to take it back to the church of Saint Martin with a procession. A tradition which faded away after the fall of the Republic of Venice.
